Peter Betlem is a researcher in the Energy Geomechanics and Geophysics section at the Offshore Energy department at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI). He applies quantitative and programmatic approaches to geoscientific challenges, relying on numerical models, state-of-the-art digital solutions, and multi-modal data integration.

He completed a PhD in Geoscience at the University of Oslo and the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS). His doctoral work investigated fluid-migration pathways in cap rock and overburden, building on the Longyearbyen CO2 Lab and contributing to Norwegian CCS research. His thesis is available through the UiO research archive.

Peter co-created Svalbox, Svalbard’s geoscientific data portal, where he served as deputy project manager and data manager. He has since become a big proponent for the open and FAIR publishing of data, code, and scientific findings, and actively passes this knowledge on to the next generation of geoscientists through his various teaching activities.

He holds MSc degrees in Sustainable Energy from Reykjavik University and Molecular Chemistry from Radboud University.
